The School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics hasestablishedits own characteristics on the aspects of scientific research and social service. The main research directions include Engineering structure vibration isolation, Vibration energy dissipation and the active control, Micro-scale mechanics and multi-scale correlation, Intelligent materials andstructures, Fluid-solid coupling Dynamics, Engineering analysisand simulation, Key technology of digital construction integrationand its application, Intelligent detection and damage assessment of engineering structures, Groundtreatment technology, Stress wave detection technology, Theory and practice of large-span structures, Numerical analysismethods and the virtual simulation technology in civil engineering, and so on. A group of high-level scientific research achievements has been achieved in the following fields: Building isolation technology,Key technology of rail transit integration, Integral structural damage detection system and Structure analysis and design of arch bridge. Since 2001, our achievements have won5second prize awardsof National Scientific and Technological AdvancementAward, more than 30 provincial technical awards and 7 provincial teaching awards. The annual average number of papers indexed by SCI, EI and ISTPismore than 200, among which more than 60 papers are indexed by SCI. We are also in charge of more than 20 scientificresearch projects of funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Doctoral Fund, Provincial Fund and international cooperation funds. Meanwhile, we provided research services to large projects such as Hu-Rong Expressway and Wuhan Railway. The annual research expenditure exceeds 50 million Yuan.

The Department of Mechanics at Huazhong University of Science & Technology was founded in 1978. Before then, it was part of the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics in 1960s. Professor Hao Li, a renowned scientist and educator in mechanics, was the first head of the department. The Department of Mechanics has made significant achievements during the past 30 years. The first post-doctoral research station was established in 1995, and it started to award doctoral degree in 2000. Now both Master's and Doctoral Degrees are awarded in four areas: general mechanics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and engineering mechanics, respectively, among which, solid mechanics is the key discipline of Hubei province and engineering mechanics was rated as a national characteristic specialty in 2008. Besides, the Dept. of Mechanics is where the Hubei key laboratory and the Hubei mechanics academy council locate. In addition, the Department undertakes Journal of Solid Mechanics with its English version Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica being included in SCI and published worldwide. There are currently more than 50 faculty and staff members in the department, including 15 professors, more than 20 associate professors and senior engineers, among them, more than 30 possess Doctoral Degrees.
Established in 2000, Department of Architectural Engineering at School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics of Huazhong University of Science & Technology was derived from relevant majors at the former Huazhong University of Technology and former Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction. The department consists of four instructional laboratories (Reinforced Concrete Structures, Engineering Seismology & Structural Mechanics, Steel & Composite Structures, and Civil Engineering Materials & Structural Testing) and several research laboratories (Structural Testing Lab, Civil Engineering Materials Lab, Surveying Lab, and Structural Diagnosis Center). There are 38 faculty and staff members in the department, including 9 professors, 19 associate professors, 6 lecturers, 3 senior engineers, 2 engineers and 1 intermediate technician. Among the faculty members, 23 of them hold doctoral degrees and 11 possess the certifications of National First Class Certified Structural Engineer.
The Department of Road & Bridge Engineering at Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) was founded in 2000. Before then, it was part of the Department of Urban Construction in the former Wuhan Urban Construction College, one of the three universities/colleges merged to form the new HUST. Professor Guoding Wang, a renowned bridge expert, was the first head of the department. Currently, both Master’s and Doctoral Degrees are awarded in three areas: bridge & tunnel engineering, road & railway engineering, and geotechnical & underground structural engineering. There are three teaching and research sections in the department, i.e., road, bridge and geotechnical engineering teaching and research sections. There are currently more than 30 faculty and staff members in the department, including 13 professors, 11 associate professors and more than 5 lecturers. Among them, 25 possess Doctoral Degrees.
The Department of Construction Management is committed to cultivate high-end specialized professionals and industry leaders with international vision and competitiveness, who are required to meet the demand of the social, economic, scientific and technological developments. They have a solid foundation of engineering technology, excellent management ability and cooperation spirit. And they have good innovation consciousness and professional ethics, basic training experience for scientific research and engineering projects. They can be engaged in engineering technology, management and research work. So far, this specialty has transported a large number of senior specialized talents for national engineering construction industry, who are highly welcomed by the employers. There are currently more than 50 faculty and staff members in the department, including 15 professors, more than 20 associate professors and senior engineers, among them, more than 30 possess Doctoral Degrees.
The Department of Traffic & Transportation Engineering provides teaching and research for undergraduates and graduates, focusing on studies of traffic engineering, system planning, design & control, etc. The research areas cover all the branches of traffic and transportation engineering, with emphasis on traffic and transportation planning, traffic engineering design, traffic safety, traffic control system development, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and logistics. According to different fields of interests, the department is divided into 2 teaching and research sections: Traffic section and Transportation section. The whole department has 11 faculty members, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors and 8 lecturers, all of which have obtained Ph.D. degrees.
