VI. Specific Requirements for Doctoral Candidates in Civil Engineering
1. Besides completing course credits required, doctoral candidates are required to engage in plenty of research practices. The supervisor and the research team share responsibility for training doctoral candidates.
2. Under the guidance of supervisor, doctoral candidates should get access to the latest literature related with their selected research fields, write out topic selection report and report it to the experts in the field relevant with hearing their queries and giving appropriate defence. Only when the topic selection report is approved can they be formally engaged in doctoral thesis.
3. In the mid-term of dissertation project ( about a year after selecting the topic), doctoral candidates should make a progressing report to the experts in the fields, including presenting the development of dissertation, putting forward the plan and measures in the next phase and submitting a written report for the approval of participants.
4. Doctoral candidates are required to attend domestic and international academic conferences and make academic exchanges with counterparts at home and abroad. Doctoral candidates are required to attend international or domestic important academic conference for at least once and submit a paper or make a report.
5. Doctoral candidates are required to attend public academic lectures for no less than ten times and to take notes down on the uniform record book required by college with the signature of reporter or host. Record books shall be submitted to the person in charge before doctoral candidates apply for dissertation review and only when approved can they be granted credit.
6. The main innovations of the academic dissertation should be published on important academic journals at home and abroad. Doctoral candidates are required to publish (or receive formal acceptance letter) at least three academic papers related to the research results (of which at least one must be published on foreign periodical cited by SCI, and conference paper as well as journal supplement paper are not taken into account). Among three papers published, one paper of Category B or two papers of Category C or above category are required at least.
7. After the first draft of dissertation is completed and approved by the supervisor, relevant experts in this discipline will be organized to make a dissertation pre-defence. Doctoral candidates should modify and perfect the academic dissertation according to the problems posed in the pre-defence.
8. After the modified doctoral dissertation is examined and approved by supervisor and the formal examination of the relevant responsible persons in college is undertaken, doctoral candidates could submit dissertation to be reviewed, and the list of paper reviewers must be ratified by the relevant persons in charge. If a doctoral student who has obtained master degree but register for doctoral degree in less than 3 years, or a MD-PhD based and a direct doctoral candidate who register for doctoral degree in less than 5 years applies for an advanced defense, the dissertation need to be blind reviewed by the Degree Advisory Committee in college.
9. If doctoral candidates have academic misconducts which are identified as serious violation, they should be disqualified for applying for doctoral degree.
