About the Department of Architectural Engineering

Established in 2000, Department of Architectural Engineering at School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics of Huazhong University of Science & Technology was derived from relevant majors at the former Huazhong University of Technology and former Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction. The department consists of four instructional laboratories (Reinforced Concrete Structures, Engineering Seismology & Structural Mechanics, Steel & Composite Structures, and Civil Engineering Materials & Structural Testing) and several research laboratories (Structural Testing Lab, Civil Engineering Materials Lab, Surveying Lab, and Structural Diagnosis Center). There are 38 faculty and staff members in the department, including 9 professors, 19 associate professors, 6 lecturers, 3 senior engineers, 2 engineers and 1 intermediate technician. Among the faculty members, 23 of them hold doctoral degrees and 11 possess the certifications of National First Class Certified Structural Engineer.

Overview of Architectural Engineering

The disciplines of Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention & Mitigation, and Protective Engineering were founded on the basis of the Architectural & Structural Engineering Discipline at the former Huazhong Institute of Technology and the department was certified the right to confer the doctoral degree in Structural Engineering in 1993. After the combination and reconstruction of colleges in 2000, the faculty members in Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention & Mitigation, and Protective Engineering from two universities gathered together. Under the collective efforts of these faculty members, the department was certified the right to confer doctoral degree in Disaster Prevention & Mitigation and Protective Engineering. At present, the department owns one Distinguished Professor who is also a Changjiang Scholar, one Visiting Professor who is also a Changjiang Scholar, one scholar who has been awarded the National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, one scholar who has been selected as a member of the Ministry of Education New Century Outstanding Talents Support Program, three scholars who have been selected as a member of Hubei Province New Century Talents Support Program, and one scholar who has been awarded Chutian Scholar. The department provides a comprehensive education and training to both undergraduate and graduate students. 5000 undergraduates, 200 doctoral students and 1500 masters students have graduated from the department. Three doctoral theses and more than twenty masters theses have been selected to win the Excellent Thesis Prize in Hubei Province.

The department offers the doctoral program in Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention & Mitigation and Protective Engineering. It has been developing rapidly during these years and now possesses prestigious faculty members and state-of-the-art facilities, both of which are the basis of cultivating high-class engineers and research scientists.

Achievements in past five years

In the past five years, Department of Architectural Engineering has undertaken one project funded by National Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, one project sponsored by National 973 Program, more than 30 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation, more than 20 research projects funded by Hubei Province Science Foundation, more than 20 projects supported by Doctoral Science Foundation from the Ministry of Education, and more than 30 Provincial Funded Projects and Applied Science Projects for Local Government. The total amount of the funding received by the department is about 50,000,000 Yuan. The department has received one National Scientific and Technological Advancement Award (2nd class), one Provincial Natural Science Award (1st class), five Provincial or Miniterial Awards of Scientific and Technological Advancement (2nd class), among others. Additionally, the faculty members have published six professional books, twelve textbooks, more than twenty patents, and more than 300 papers, in which more than 180 of them have been cited in SCI, EI or ISTP.

Teaching

1. Guidelines

The department promotes the educational philosophy which emphasizes a firm foundation, knowledge of wide range, capability quality and innovation consciousness, and cultivate technical talents who master the fundamental theories and knowledge of civil engineering, attain basic training of engineering and posses an innovative mind.

2. Educational reform

During the past 5 years, two educational reform projects at provincial or ministerial level and two educational reform projects at school level have been accomplished. The department received one outstanding award for school level educational research achievement. In addition, the school teaches one provincial level high-quality course and four school level high-quality courses.

3. Quality of teaching

All course instructors meet post qualifications and the person of primary responsibility attaches great importance to undergraduate education. All professors and associate professors teach undergraduate courses. Teaching experiments lay emphasis on development of comprehensive experiments and the cultivation of hands-on ability. High-quality textbooks are utilized and the research on teaching method as well as the application of advanced teaching techniques is greatly promoted. The rate of high-quality class reaches 98%. In the past five years, one person was awarded the first prize for school level teaching quality and twenty-one people were awarded the second prize for school level teaching quality. Two persons have won the first and second prize of school level teaching contest for young teachers, respectively. In addition, the topic selection of graduation project is reasonable with regulatory process of dissertation defense. Twenty students were awarded excellent graduation project award at provincial level during the past five years.
